Rowan and his Mom Jessica from Charlotte NC. Rowan has learning differences and has had trouble learning to ride a bike.
“Thanks again for all your help getting the tandem bike attachment and installing it Friday!
Here are some photos of our trip today. He’s already starting to improve. We are very grateful!”
We have no helper in Charlotte NC, but have been able to make two loans there because the Annapolis MD helper has family there and travels down quarterly. If anyone who lives in the area would like to volunteer please contact us.
Currently on loan (pictures pending). In Chesapeake VA, Joan and her daughter Elizabeth are using one of our Burley Piccolo trailer bikes to rid together when the winter weather allows. Joan is a medically retired Navy veteran. Elizabeth (3 1/2) likes to pedal hard and see how far she can push the towing bike. She has pushed a tandem with her grandparents on it for 3/10 of a mile.
In Trappe MD (near Easton), Gia (blind) from DC is riding on warmer week ends with her friend Lyndsey on our Bike Friday Family tandem.
Indigo from Leonardtown MD rides the front of the OPUS Counterpoint tandem with her father Tim. Indigo went through a number of surgeries over her life to correct a leg length discrepancy but finally decided to have it amputated to get a prothesis. She used the OPUS with and without the new leg as she healed after surgery. Moving back to her own bicycle soon. Indigo says “Before I had the bike I was always on the couch just watching TV or in my bed on my phone, I rarely went outside, and I was not very active. Having the bike allowed me to get out of the house and it pushed me to be more active. I am very thankful to have the opportunity to go riding with only one leg and the fact that I am only a couple months out of amputation makes it even more meaningful.” Indigo has since moved to Morgantown WA and is the youth member on our board
Geordan from Charlotte NC and his grandfather. Geordan rode the tandem through the summer and fall of 2020
Greta Ann (Captain) and Nancy (Stoker)Before I had the bike I was alway on the couch just watching TV or in my bed on my phone, I rarely went outside, and I was not very active. Having the bike allowed me to get out of the house and it pushed me to be more active. I am very thankful to have the opportunity to go riding with only one leg and the fact that I am only a couple months out of amputation makes it even more meaningful. recently turned in a tandem for one that fits a little better.Greta Ann writes: “Thanks for checking in. I like the new bike a lot. I think Nancy likes it but not as much as I do. She’s very flexible and amenable to many things however. I find it easier to shift the new bike and now that we have a rack, we can put a pannier on it and have grand adventures. We are still planning on riding throughout October at least. We are really having a grand time of it. I know that Nancy is an old hat at this but I’m having so much fun.”I should add that Nancy had ridden a tandem before, but not for several years.
